Three doors
Past · present · next move — a finished conversation with yourself.
Most people do not lack advice. They lack a finished conversation with themselves: one that does not quit when it gets specific, and that ends in something they can act on next week.
Forms help some people. Frameworks help others. Endless chat with a clever model often helps least of all — it feels like progress while the calendar stays the same.
Here is a simple alternative: three doors.
The four beats still hold
This essay uses the same method as the rest of this site: map · ideal · gap · path.
- Map — what people already buy: workbooks, development maps, coaching, generic AI chat.
- Ideal — self-analytics first; conversation over forms; free doors that are proud; a paid finish line only when free path quits.
- Gap — free chat quits; courses pile up unfinished; external scores replace honest weeks.
- Path — three super-prompts you can run tonight; optional guided session later.
Three doors
| Door | Question underneath | You leave with |
|---|---|---|
| Past | What still runs me? | A short pattern brief |
| Present | What is true this month? | A ledger: keep / cut / strengthen |
| Future | What am I aiming at that survives reality? | 90-day direction + week-1 move |
Not a memoir. Not a vision board. A self-authored arc.
Rules that make the free path work
- One question per turn. If the model stacks five, tell it to stop.
- Mirror first. It must show it heard you before it digs.
- Specificity or restart. Place, person (role is fine), week — not “I wasn’t fulfilled.”
- Artifact at the end. If there is no page you can paste into a note, you did not finish the door.
- No diagnosis cosplay. Clarity, not a clinical label from a chatbot.
Free path (start here)
- Open a clean chat with any strong model.
- Run Past until you can lock a Pattern Brief.
- Run Present with that brief pasted in.
- Run Future with both artifacts.
- Put the three pages where you will see them in seven days.
If you only do Past, you still win something: a named pattern is easier to interrupt than a mood.
When free is not enough
Free prompts fail the same way diets fail: the structure is real; the finish pressure is optional. A paid Authoring Session (when offered) is the same three doors with an agent that holds the thread, interrupts vagueness, and ends in a debrief you keep. Not therapy. Not unlimited chat. A completion product.
Until Session is live, the honest door is: run the free path; use Work if you want a human study on a real system instead.
What this is not
- A clone of any trademarked writing suite — past → present → future is older than any one product; wording here is house-built.
- A replacement for a clinician or friend in the room when life is on fire.
- An external score of your “level.” The dataset is you.
A small challenge
This week, run only Past. When the Pattern Brief is locked, ask: if this pattern runs unchanged for five years, what does ordinary Tuesday look like? Answer in a kitchen, a commute, an inbox — not a brand sentence.
The walk (method) Subscribe Work
Paste-ready system blocks for each door live on the longer rabbit notes when you have house access; this public leaf is the spine any strong model can follow if you invent the interviewer rules above.
