Machine-building process (mock)
Mock catalog. This page sells a system of offers — Maclaine’s personal process for machines — not a finished library. Many SKUs below are imagined prices and names. Live checkouts only where a button already says live. Title not locked.
Maclaine’s machine-building process
One personal system for the whole arc: build → program → test → commission → deploy → service → upgrade — including how a machine is meant to survive ~25 years of parts, people, and code churn.
You do not buy “the whole process” as one blob unless you choose a bundle. Most pieces are sold separately. This page is the map so you can pick the rung that matches the pain.
How work is sold (three depths)
| Depth | You do | Maclaine does | Price shape (mock) |
|---|---|---|---|
| DIY | Read, walk checklists, ship | Artifacts only | $29–$199 per guide/pack |
| Done with you | Your plant, your hours on the tools | Calls, reviews, redlines, path | $111–$2,500 per engagement |
| Done for you | Decisions + access | Build / program / prove / document | $5k–$40k+ slices; retainers higher |
Price jumps are intentional. DIY is cheap because delivery is files. DFY is expensive because calendar and liability move to Maclaine.
The arc (products by stage)
Each stage can stand alone. Bundle only when you want a path, not a single aspirin.
1 · Build & panel craft — DIY
Live $29 · other guides mock
- Live today: Panel process pack — $29 (spine, pre-power, failure modes, shop sequence)
- Panel building guide (layout, wireway, heat, service loops) — later
- Labeling / schematics reading / IO templates — later
2 · Program & prove — DIY + DWY
DIY $49–$129 · DWY from $500 (mock / some live)
- How to troubleshoot PLC/HMI code (method, not brand religion)
- How to troubleshoot electrical (safe order, common lies meters tell)
- Test plans before “it works on my laptop”
- Live today: Engineering study $500 · Automation study $111 · 10h block $1,129
3 · Commission & power-up — DIY aspirin
$49 pack (mock)
In the pack: panel checklist · IO checkout list · startup / power-up sequence (gates + stop rules) · one-page floor brief.
Peace of mind job: shared bar before someone asks can we power it?
Credit: full pack price toward hours or a service package within 90 days (one credit).
Closest live: panel process pack — $29 Commissioning pack — $49 (mock)
4 · Deploy & handoff — DIY + DWY
$79–$399 DIY · DWY $750–$2,500 (mock)
- Turnover package template (what ops actually needs)
- Spare strategy that is not “buy everything”
- Training outline for the people who inherit the cell
- DWY: remote turnover review / redline of your package
5 · Service — phone line & retainers
Mock subs · not live
| Tier | Shape | Mock price |
|---|---|---|
| DIY+ | Pack library access + async Q (tight cap) | $29–$49/mo |
| Phone tech line | Metered voice when the floor is stuck | $149–$399/mo + overage |
| Plant retainer | Named machines, priority, quarterly review | $800–$2,500/mo |
Phone tech line (how it is meant to work):
- First: Maclaine — while we learn your machines, vendors, and “normal.”
- Then: AI on your notes, drawings habits, prior calls — faster triage in your language.
- Always: Maclaine as backup when risk is high or you say human.
Tailored means your equipment and failure modes — not a generic chatbot in a hard hat.
6 · 25-year survival & upgrade path
DIY $99–$199 · DWY $1,500–$5,000 · DFY project-priced (mock)
Parts go obsolete. People leave. Code rots. A “25-year service survival plan” is not a warranty slogan — it is decisions written down:
- What must stay serviceable vs what we accept dying
- Vendor and platform exit ramps
- When to patch vs replace a cell
- Upgrade waves that do not strand production
DIY: workbook + decision trees. DWY: plan for one line with Maclaine. DFY: multi-cell roadmap + docs your team can run.
Done for you (when DIY is the wrong tool)

What exists vs what we build
Live or nearly live: engineering study, automation study, hours, some Work sprint/ongoing links, this mock map.
To build over time: each DIY guide as a real file set; phone line ops; survival workbook; DFY playbooks. The page can sell the spine before every binder exists — then we fill drawers without renaming the process every month.
Pick a door in one line
- Power-up this week → commissioning pack
- Don’t know what good is → study
- Know done; need hands → hours / DFY sprint
- Keep a line from dying quietly → phone tech / retainer
- Obsolescence and decade decisions → 25-year survival
- Learn the craft yourself → DIY guides / panel craft kit
