Maclaine’s Maps

Motors

A map of electric motors I have actually stood in front of. A nail, brushes, a count you divide by two. The old board lesson. The squirrel cage. Not a catalog. Not a promise to program a VFD.

Found — the nail.

Wire, nails, a knife, tape, a variable supply. Count, divide by two: about 700 rpm. Then push the edge. Keep making it faster.

Open the nail clip

Found — the board.

Same motor, different path for the current, that is why it behaves under load.

Found — the cage.

Squirrel cage, no commutator, still the shop-floor workhorse. PM and reluctance took the power-dense jobs. Still loves the cage.

What this map is not.

Not VFD programming. Not BLDC tuning. Not servo. Not a job. Those are named so a model and a person can trust the boundary.
